An update from two weeks into my 30-day Korean skincare challenge and why two face masks are better than one.
Two weeks in to this Korean skincare challenge, and I’m already a superfan. My skin is brighter, more moisturized, and feels significantly softer… and the routine no longer takes me 20 minutes to get through, which is a significant improvement. I’ll be sharing more of the things I’ve learned at the end of the month, but one thing that couldn’t wait was the power of layering face masks, known as double masking.
I know that starting a whole new skincare routine can sound daunting (and expensive), so I’d recommend working a few of these 15-minutes-or-less mask duos into your existing routine to start. Korean skincare experts recommend doing masks 1-2x week, and I can see why. These things are like power vitamins mixed with a superfood shake for your face, and they’ve been a game-changer for my routine.
Double masking, which is layering two masks for maximum benefits, is a new skincare trend that I absolutely love. Check out my suggestions, or try combining masks you already own with my tips below.
Here are two of my favorite pairings, specially designed to combat my two main concerns:
For awesomely moisturized skin:
First exfoliate with the Skin Food Black Sugar Mask (I’ve also heard that the Fresh Sugar Face Polish is similar) to remove dead skin.
After rinsing your face, use the First Aid Beauty Instant Oatmeal Mask to seal in moisture and soothe any redness from the exfoliation.
If you want glow-y, even-toned skin:
Start with the one-two punch of the Dr Gross Alpha Beta Peels, layering according to package instructions.
Don’t rinse your face: instead, immediately apply the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Mask to calm everything down.
To combine masks you already own:
Look for products with complimentary benefits – don’t layer multiple masks that do the same thing.
I like to start with an exfoliation or peeling mask, and then follow with something that soothes or moisturizes.
Try a few different combos and see what works for you!
