As I talked about yesterday, I’ve been trying to make fewer plans and leave more unstructured time for myself. There is one recurring plan that I actively look forward to, though, and that’s Sunday night “family dinners” with friends.

We chose Sundays in part because it’s a relaxing way to wind down a weekend, but mostly because Sundays are when new episodes of Game of Thrones air. We decided that watching the episodes wasn’t enough, so now we do super-trendy-not-at-all-nerdy weekly themed dinners around the various Game of Thrones locations. Last week’s theme location was The North/The Wall, so we had hearty chili, cornbread, and bananas foster for the fires in Castle Black. For the uninitiated: let’s just say we’re really getting into the show.
It’s become something I look forward to in earnest for so many reasons, but namely because it’s fun to have something so silly and lighthearted (that also happens to be delicious and shared with friends) to think about throughout the week. Plus, it gave me an excuse to flambé bananas!
My friend snapped these photos as we were en route to the grocery store for ingredients, and I wanted to share as an easy example of my favorite kind of weekend dressing.
It’s difficult to see in the photos, but this maxi skirt is velvet. Velvet! Combined with the silk of the top and the heavy knit of the sweater, it’s an incredibly cozy outfit. If you find that you’re getting bored with one of your wardrobe staples, look for a similar item but in an unusual fabric. The velvet of this makes it feel so luxe, but I didn’t feel out of place during our casual dinner. And–bonus–the velvet happens to be especially spill-proof.
All in all, just about everything you could want from a skirt, and a Sunday.
