My first weekend in Paris was sunny, and warm enough to warrant an afternoon drinking rosé on the Canal St-Martin (a treat, after spending my first three days recovering). Unusual, for so late in October.
Sure enough, Paris delivered fall-appropriate weather in one fell swoop with a windy & overcast Monday morning. Without batting an eye, it seemed that all of Paris seamlessly transitioned into warmer attire, topped with an endless parade of beautiful wool coats in all cuts and colors.
While wool coats are nothing new, the Parisians I saw updated this classic in new shapes and hues that I could have photographed all day.
To keep it from being boring, choose to update either a neutral color with a new cut or take an ordinary cut but balance with an all-over new color. There are so many fantastic coats out there with interesting details that make them fresh and relevant.
And of course, the only way to keep thick wools like this from looking dowdy is to find one that fits your frame well. I’m especially partial to an oversized lapel on a well-cut shoulder, or a flattering waist tie.
If you’re of a brighter sort and hate the thought of neutrals, perhaps the dizzying array of fall neons would suit instead. Above all, monochrome is key: an all-over color or single print is the perfect fall complement to the tidal wave of clashing prints we’ve seen already this year.
Inspired by the elegant choices I saw on the streets of Paris, here are my top picks to update your fall coat.
