Few things make me happier than a fresh latte, a stack of new magazines, and an entire morning to myself.
While I’ll read just about anything once, there are a few publications that I always come back to. Whether for day-to-day style inspiration, or thoughtful essays on topics of interest (oftentimes on interests I didn’t even realize I had), these are the 7 fashion magazine constants in my rotation.
A. Numéro – fr
I first discovered Numéro last year, while doing my usual sweep of the magazine stand upon landing in Paris. Hooked after my first issue, I rely on Numéro to push the boundaries of fashion editorials in a way that only a French publication can. They are edgy, austere yet sexy, and a little bit other-worldly. In other words, perfection.
B. majestic disorder (UK)
Majestic Disorder self-describes as “art + culture lifestyle for creative nomads,” an accurate yet humble description. MD has become my go-to for knowing the who-is-about-to-become-who… in other words: the creators, makers, movers, and shakers that you should know about… years ahead of the curve. The interviews and literary pieces demand to be read again and again, and never fail to disappoint.
C. PORTER – uk
PORTER for me is a bit of a fashion dream world, a space that makes no pretenses at being anything less than the sculpted world constructed solely by high-end designers. As the brainchild of NET-A-PORTER, this comes as no surprise. However, PORTER also manages to highlight many of the intelligent and talented female businesswomen and leaders of today’s world, including my personal career spirit animal/inspiration, Ruzwana Bashir.
D. Kinfolk – us
Though Kinfolk is not a traditional fashion magazine, it has earned its place in this lineup through the elegant and well-curated lifestyle that it presents in each issue. The latest includes pieces that range from the comparison of San Francisco shrubbery and a natural appreciation of human flaws; to a delightfully light piece called, “Julia Child’s Guide to Cooking Terribly.” It is truly everything you never thought you needed.
E. The Gentlewoman – uk
This biannual magazine is a publication for the “modern woman of style and purpose,” a mission which is exemplified in its ability to be remarkably real. Showcasing women in their natural dress, in their natural environment, serves only to highlight the exemplary females that walk among us.
Of course, no list of my favorite publications would be complete without a mention of VOGUE. But when you’re looking for something unexpected, these magazines will all hold their own in terms of serving up life in a new light.
